HERE/NOW installment 8 Saturday, March 12th

cathartech will be performing at the upcoming HERE/NOW .  The gist:

“Eight dancers/movement artists and eight musicians/sound artists are contacted and agree to participate. The sixteen participants arrive 1.5 hours prior to performance time to solve their individual technical issues, warm up and explore the performance space itself, receive a brief program orientation from the curators, sit for a group portrait and get food and drinks if desired. The entirety of the musical equipment is set up in the performance space. In one hat is placed the names of the dancers/movement artists. In another hat is placed the names of the musicians/sound artists. With all the participants present in the performance space and the audience seated, the show begins. A random individual from the audience pulls a name from the Dancer/Movement Artist hat and reads it aloud. Another random individual from the audience does the same from the Musician/Sound Artist hat. The two participants are then given eight minutes to improvise together. Lights are slowly faded to black as each performance approaches the 7min 45sec point in order to ensure an eight minute length and to provide a time within which the participants may create an appropriate ending.

With approximately two minutes in between performances, four performances transpire. A brief fifteen minute intermission occurs after the fourth performance, and then the final four performances take place.

The real magic in this concept is that not only is it unknown at any point who will be paired up with whom but when in the evening that pairing will occur. Only the final two participants can be certain of both their collaborative partner and when they will be performing. And to add yet another layer to the unknowns, there is no prior communication between the curators as to whom they’ve been able to gather as their eight participants”
